En 1979, dans la région de l’Alto Marañón (Pérou), la communauté native de Wawaim s’opposa au tournage sur ses terres du long-métrage Fitzcarraldo de Werner Herzog (1982). Le conflit aboutit à une réaffirmation des droits des populations natives, en accélérant l’émergence de nouvelles formes d’organisations collectives jusque-là inédites en Amazonie péruvienne. La création du Conseil Awajún et Huambisa en 1977 et le conflit de 1979 représentèrent dans l’histoire des awajúns le passage de la réciprocité négative à la réciprocité positive : le conflit opposant les awajúns à Herzog fut la première bataille menée de manière bureaucratique et légaliste. La tradition guerrière des awajúns prit la forme, en 1979, de réunions politiques, lettres, documents juridiques et d’allers et retours entre l’Alto Marañón et les ministères à Lima. Le Conseil Awajún et Huambisa communiqua sur leurs actions, notamment en invitant Manfred Schäfer à venir documenter la lutte en cours et développa son réseau pour contrer les attaques lancées par le cinéaste dans la presse. L’activité du Conseil Awajún et Huambisa et le projet de Werner Herzog eurent comme principales conséquences au long terme de situer les peuples indigènes péruviens comme des acteurs politiques à part entière.

Une quarantaine d’années plus tard, le projet collectif Ipáamamu - Histoires de Wawaim, réalisé au sein de la communauté native de Wawaim rend compte du long combat des awajúns pour l’autodétermination. L’ipáamamu est un concept awajún désignant l’invitation faite à un groupe de personnes afin de réaliser un projet déterminé. Il s’agit d’allier des forces pour réaliser un travail physique qu’on ne pourrait accomplir seul·e. Cela peut prendre la forme d’un chantier collectif comme la construction d’une maison, mais aussi d’une action guerrière.

In 1979, in the Alto Marañón region of Peru, the Native Community of Wawaim opposed the filming of Werner Herzog’s feature film Fitzcarraldo (1982) on their lands. The conflict led to a reaffirmation of the rights of the native populations, accelerating the emergence of new forms of collective organisation hitherto unknown in the Peruvian Amazon. The creation of the Awajún and Huambisa Council in 1977 and the conflict of 1979 represented a shift in the history of the Awajúns from negative to positive reciprocity: the conflict between the Awajúns and Herzog was the first battle fought in a bureaucratic and legalistic manner. The Awajún warrior tradition took the form, in 1979, of political meetings, letters, legal documents and back and forth between the Alto Marañón and the ministries in Lima. The Awajún and Huambisa Council communicated about their actions, including inviting Manfred Schäfer to come and document the ongoing struggle, and developed its network to counter the attacks by the filmmaker in the press. The main long-term consequences of the activities of the Awajún and Huambisa Council and Herzog’s project were to establish the Peruvian indigenous peoples as key political actors.

Some forty years later, the collective project Ipáamamu - Stories of Wawaim, produced in the Native Community of Wawaim, gives an account of the long struggle of the Awajúns for self-determination. The ipáamamu is an Awajún concept that refers to an invitation to a group of people to carry out a specific project. It is about joining forces to carry out a physical task that one could not do alone. This can take the form of a collective project such as the construction of a house, but also of a warlike action.
